"Owensboro, History
Owensboro was first settled in the year 1797. It was initially known as "Yellowbanks" which referred to the color of the sand on the banks of River Ohio. The first general store of the area was opened in 1810 by David Morton and this led to a gradual growth in the population. The city was incorporated as Owensborough in 1817 by the Kentucky Legislature. It was later shortened to Owensboro. In terms of population, industrial growth, and culture it is the state’s third largest city."
